Crafted Defenses are here

Clash of Clans has added a new feature at Town Hall 17 called Crafted Defenses. There are three of them coming to the game with this update, Hook Tower, Flame Spinner, and Crusher Mortar. To get started, you’ll need to place the new Crafting Station building, which is free and has no build time.

You can build and upgrade up to three of them during a special phase called the Crafting Phase, which lasts for around three months. Once that’s done, you can pick which of the three defenses you want to use in your base, and switch between them at any time.

Even though you can build all three, you can only activate one at a time in your base. The details of all the three are given below.

  • Hook Tower: This defense pulls enemy troops toward it and stuns them for a few seconds. Just note, it doesn’t deal damage itself, and it can’t hook Siege Machines
  • Flame Spinner: Think of it like a spinning flamethrower. It constantly spins around, shooting out fire that damages any nearby troops, both ground and air.
  • Crusher Mortar: This one launches big, bouncing mortars that deal splash damage to ground units. Even if troops get inside its usual dead zone, the splash can still hit them.

Working of Crafted Defenses

Each crafted defense starts at level 3, but that level is made up of three individual modulesHPAttribute 1 (usually damage), and Attribute 2 (like range, attack speed, or special effects). Each module begins at level 1 and can be upgraded up to level 9 for the first season.

Upgrades are faster and cheaper than normal buildings, but you’ll still need a builder, and only one module per building can be upgraded at a time. That means if you have three free builders, you can work on all three crafted defenses at once.

The total level of the building is the sum of its module levels, and as you upgrade, the building’s appearance changes visually to reflect its strength across four stages. These crafted defenses follow a seasonal system.

Each season lasts three months, and with every new season, the current defenses are replaced by a fresh set. When a new season starts, you’ll either be prompted to choose a new defense if you’re eligible, or the Crafting Station will be removed from your base if you’re not at the required Town Hall.

At the start of each season, your upgrades reset, and you begin upgrading the new defense lineup from level 1 again. This system is meant to keep maxed-out players engaged while also allowing newer players to catch up as they won’t need to go through previous seasonal defenses.

New Spell: Ice Block

The biggest highlight of the update is the Ice Block spell, a new Dark Spell available starting at Town Hall 14 by upgrading the Dark Spell Factory to level 7. Unlike traditional spells that affect defenses or the village, Ice Block freezes your troops, significantly reducing the damage they take.

While under this spell, they won’t move or fight back, but they’ll be almost impossible to damage. They’ll just stay there, frozen in place, barely taking any damage at all. At max level 5 (TH17), it provides a 94% damage reduction while preventing the troops from moving or attacking.

Ice Block level Laboratory level Incoming damage reduction (%) Upgrade time Upgrade cost (DE)

3 13 90 11d 200K
4 14 92 14d 280K
5 15 94 16d 320K

Ice Block lasts for seven seconds across all levels.

New Feature: Cookbook

Remember the coverage where I mentioned the ‘Army Suggestions’ tab? Yes, that feature is here, under the name Cookbook. The use case is pretty similar to what I shared earlier.

This addition offers recommended army compositions for your current and lower Town Hall levels. You can copy, test, and save these lineups into recipe slots, especially useful for casual players who may not want to build armies from scratch.

This tab has two types of army setups: Starter Armies and Featured Armies. You can either use these setups directly or save them to your list. Starter Armies are easy to use. They only include regular troops, spells, and basic equipment: No Super Troops.

These are great for trying out new attack styles. Featured Armies, also called Creator Armies, are more powerful. They can include anything in the game and are made by experienced players. But they are only available for a short time. You’ll only see armies made for your current Town Hall level. The Featured and Creator Armies are different for each Town Hall.

New Levels added: Troops, Siege Machines, and Pet

New levels have been added to several troops and units. All walls can now be upgraded as 75 more Wall pieces at level 18 have been added.
