Players step into the dirt-flecked shoes of former outlaw biker Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter trying to find a reason to live in a land surrounded by death. The core experience remains the same: players scavenge through abandoned settlements for equipment to craft valuable items and weapons, and take their chances with other survivors trying to eke out a living through fair trade or more violent means. The crafting system allows players to combine found objects, leading to satisfying moments like crafting a baseball bat with a saw blade to eliminate enemies in a single hit. Combat, especially melee, provides a weighty and bloody experience. Hordes, one of the most thrilling aspects of Days Gone, are massive, hundreds-strong masses of Freakers that require strategy and familiarity with the environment to overcome. Each horde encounter becomes a sprint for survival, demanding resourcefulness and quick thinking.
